What is Self-Care?

In today's society, the term 'self-care' is thrown around a lot. There are tons of chat about what it is and what it isn't, but the truth is...self-care is whatever you want it to be. Hence the word 'self'.

Self-care is taking the time to get to know yourself better, and catering to the needs that you discover. This is often ignored, but it is so important. Self-care also helps us sharpen our mental and physical health through better self-esteem, stress management, and overall well-being. Self-care forms an essential part of a lifestyle that keeps us healthy, happy, and more in tune with our minds and bodies.

According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs, we all need is the following:

  • food, water, rest
  • security, and safety
  • belongingness, and intimacy
  • prestige, and a feeling of accomplishment
  • self- fulfillment, and a form of creativity

Honestly, the entire list is self-care, if you do not take care of yourself you will feel in lack and constantly in need of something else. Love on yourself! Spoil yourself! The way you treat yourself is the basis for how everyone else in the world will treat you.

Since self-care is about you, and your relationship with yourself. The quality of the relationship you have with yourself, can only be determined by you! We have established that self-care is essential to living a fulfilled and meaningful life...but how do you achieve it?

Here is a list of 12 Self-Care ideas!

1.Go for a walk outside

Other than reducing your chances of a heart attack by 35%, walking outdoors will immediately improve your mood. Just 10 minutes of observing nature and stretching your legs can produce endorphins in the brain.

2. Read a meaningful book

Science shows that reading helps with depression, cuts stress, and reduces the chances of Alzheimer's later in life. Reading for just 10 mins lowers blood pressure and your heart rate. So find a book that you're interested in and read away!

3. Watch your favorite TV show

Have you ever been so into your TV show that the real world does not exist? Watching TV is not productive, however; when you are having a bad day, your favorite show is a sure way to take your mind off the problem and boost your mood.

4. Take a warm bath

Warm water oxygenates the blood and makes it flow easier. Warm water also makes your heart beat faster, giving it a healthy workout. Submerging in water can also reduce pain and inflammation and calm the nervous system. I personally love adding bath salts, and oils to add aromatherapy. We sell everything you need to create your own self-care bath!

5. Give yourself a facial

Clear skin is always in. Facials can be expensive, so why not treat yourself! We sell vegan facial masks to give your face all time clear glow. Facials improve circulation and cleanse the skin, leaving you feeling rejuvenated.

6. Spend time with someone you love

Feeling connected to other humans is apart of our internal happiness and fulfillment. Spending time with the right person can do more than lift your mood, they can change your perspective and open your mind to new ideas.

7. Take yourself to lunch

I am a strong advocate for alone time. Mixing alone time with your favorite food is a 'win-win' in my book.

Tip: At the restaurant pick a seat outside, or near a window, there you can eat and observe life causing reflection on your own life, and since you'll be alone you can quietly talk to yourself about your thoughts...becoming your own personal therapist.

8. Go shopping

Retail therapy is a real thing. The feeling you get from receiving something new will always lighten your mood. So when you are having a bad day, treat yo self!

Meditating is becoming more popular, and that's because it works. You do not have to sit with crossed legs, mediating can be as simple and being quiet and focusing on one thing for 5 minutes. Writing something down gives it physical form. Your goals are a list of what will make you a better version of yourself.
